At the end of 1946, only 44,000 homes in the U.S. had a TV set, but by the end of 1949, that number had skyrocketed to 4.2 million. While this was a significant increase, it still meant that TVs were not yet a universal household item.
Because television sets were expensive many families did not yet own one. This made TV ownership something of a neighborhood event, and it was common for children (and adults) to gather at the home of a family lucky enough to have a set. Watching television was often a communal activity, much like listening to the radio had been in previous decades.
The idea of children gathering on a Saturday morning to watch television would have been a precursor to the Saturday morning cartoon tradition that became popular in later decades. This ad is a perfect snapshot of that moment in history —when television was just beginning to shape social habits and entertainment culture.
