This Means War

Arnold Kling strays from economics to politics and concludes:

This year's pre-election hatefest is already out of control, in my opinion. It will not end well.

I agree. We differ by his belief that a Brief Period of Violent Upheaval is unlikely, while I say it is inevitable.

Although I see it precipitated by economic issues, his sketch fits in my frame.

Arnold is talking nonsense. The 2000 election was more divisive (popular vote winner isn't electoral voter winner, the case goes to the Supreme Court which divides 5-4 on partisan lines). And there was never a risk of civil war then.

The aggravation accumulates. Has there been anything to release the tensions from 2000?

The left end of my radio is still not over Bush v. Gore. There are scores waiting to be settled.
